Fair. Trail has been cleared of brush and packed. Freezing conditions for grooming have not occurred yet. Please use extreme caution as many of the swampy areas are still very wet and seeping up.

Base: 6-10"

Spend part of your winter recreating at Bear Head Lake State Park!

Snow Depth in Woods: 32"
Base on Trails: 10"

The SNOWMOBILE trail was freshly groomed on Sunday January 30 and is in very good shape. Be sure to use caution and watch for over-hanging brush on the trail.

I CAN ICE FISH PROGRAM- SATURDAY FEBRUARY 19 FROM NOON- 3 P.M.: Be sure to pre-register for the I CAN ICE FISH program by Thursday February 17. I CAN ICE FISH is a family friendly basic ice fishing program in which each participant makes a jiggle stick to take home and tries his/her hand at ice fishing on Bear Head Lake. There is no fee for attending this program. Vehicles must have a vehicle permit. For more information call: 218-365-7229.

OTHER NOTES: On February 9 a northern shrike was spotted near the park office. Also a hoary redpoll has been seen regularly at the park bird feeder. A grey wolf was seen on the park road on Monday, January 11 near dusk. It is common after every fresh snow to find fresh wolf tracks on park road. Keep an eye open for wildlife while traversing the backwoods. Deer, ruffed grouse and fox are commonly spotted.

Base:  5"
Woods:  23"
Comments: The trail is currently in pretty good shape but with these sunny days and temps in the 40's it will quickly deteriorate. The trail will no longer be groomed. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Please post your photos of Bear Island State Forest
