Extended Kayak Trips?

I've never been to the boundry waters area, do people only go kayaking there if they commit to a whole 2 to 3 weeks out? I'm interested in day trips. Any advice would be helpful and welcome.

Any length trip works for the BWCA, but for kayaking I recommend day trips in order to ease any portages.

Do you plan to camp or stay in a cabin? If you plan to camp, you will need overnight permits for the BWCA, unless you camp outside the Boundary Waters. If that is the case, you should get your permit ASAP. More information is available here:

If you stay at a cabin or camp outside the BWCA, you will only need day permits (free).

i paddled from rainy lake along the border route to grand portage.
the 9.2 portage was a bear but fun to know i can do the trip.
the bigger lakes are easy with kayaks that can travel 7mph.
