Albany River, Ontario

Postby finnbay » Sat Feb 02, 2008 10:16 pm

Made a 500 mile trip down the Albany River in 2006. Started on Osnaburghe Lake and ended at Ft. Albany on Hudson Bay. Had a number of photos from that trip that turned out okay. The following was from the second day on the trip.

Will share more as the days go on.

Another from the Albany River. Halfway through the trip the landform changes from Canadian Shield to lowlands.

Pulled the boots off one afternoon and fished brookies in the tail race below these rapids. Caught several 16-18 inches.

Thanks, satchmoa! I'll keep pecking away at the task. My journal from the trip is about 75 pages long, so it would make a rather lengthy read. Here are a couple of fish from the trip, one of them caught below the rapids mentioned above:

With your indulgence, and because I kinda was asked, I will tell the story of my trip down the Albany River in the summer of 2006. It is a long enough story that it will have to be done in chapters and I intend to do it as I have journaled it day by day. I will include some photos most posts and if necessary some explanation or further thoughts of each days events. I will try to post a journal entry each day (no promises) but hopefully this effort will be viewed like the serials at movie houses during the middle of the last century. Enjoy!

Forward

**NOTE** Tom is my good friend Tom Deering. We have been on many adventures together over the years - hunting, fishing, canoing, camping (winter and summer) throughout the BWCA, Quetico, Superior National Forest and on many trout streams in northern Wisconsin and the North Shore of Lake Superior.

June 21, 2006

This journey started 26 years ago. Tom wanted to make a trip to Hudson Bay. He invited me along. Unfortunately, due to previous commitments, I couldn’t go. He and his cousin Jim made the trip starting in Ely and completing the excursion 90 days later at The Bay.

Ten years ago we made plans to return to the Albany along the Ogoki River. Drought and Canadian Hydro teamed up to make that route impossible just before we left.

On January 15th of this year I received an email from Tom that said in part:

“looks like I’ll have some extra time this next summer – my mind is telling me to get going and make some decent plans!”

Though we originally looked at a route that included the Otoskwin and Attawapiskat Rivers, lack of solid information led us to re-visit the Albany.

“You’re the first person I’ve run this idea past (besides Jan/Ben)…can’t think of a better partner than you!”

After running the idea past Beth and getting a physical to get a good idea of whether my body would hold up (at age 53), I agreed. What an exciting adventure!

Our trip starts at Osnaburghe Lake, Ontario
N 51 07.708’
W 90 10.440’

End of day 1 Albany River
N 51 11.969’
W 89 49.703’
Altitude 1189 feet

What a couple of days! We left Babbitt yesterday morning at 8:00 a.m. Beth and Mary Beth Shepard came along to drop us off – bless their souls! We met Tom and Jan at Ilgen City on the north shore and Tom and I repacked gear while the girls visited on the beach of Lake Superior.

Started up the shore. Made a stop in Grand Marais and then on to the Canadian border. Had some problems with bringing my shotgun and Tom’s pepper spray across. After some paperwork and $25 my gun continued the journey. Tom’s pepper spray didn’t. Border police and Info people thought both Tom and I were crazy for doing the Albany and the girls were crazy for riding with us to Pickle Lake. “Do you know what you’re getting yourselves into?”

Cut around Thunder Bay to Kekabecka Falls, bought licenses, stamps and had lunch. Took HWY 17 to Ignace, then 599 north to Pickle Lake. Pretty good road. We were warned to watch for moose but didn’t see any.

Got to Pickle Lake at about 9:45 p.m. after traveling about 530 miles. Checked into our rooms and had one beer at the bar. Pretty good accommodations at Winston Motor Lodge.

Stormed and rained off and on all night and threatened in the morning.

Tom and I got up about six and took a hike around the neighborhood. Got the girls up about quarter to seven. Had breakfast and gassed up ($6.50/gallon) and headed towards Osnaburghe Lake.

Image

Took us awhile to get organized and try out the new spray skirt. After some sad good byes we shoved off about 10:30.

Image

Traveled along the south shore of Osnaburgh around numerous islands, staying out of a brisk wind. Had lunch on a rocky point about halfway down the lake.

Image

Finally hit the Albany. Starts out wide and shallow with many boulders to watch out for. Hit our first riffle about a mile into the river. Tom said it was a pull through in ’80 but had plenty of water to run it now.

Another mile, half of it going south and then rounding a point and going half a mile back north brought us to our first real rapids. We scouted it pretty thoroughly. There were two lines to take but the one towards the center looked safer than the one along the left hand shore so we decided that would be our play. Before we could get started, a nasty storm blew in and made us hunker down for about an hour. We sat under a tarp and then took a few pictures before we shot the rapids. Our line was good and went through without incident. It was a real adrenaline rush!

Image

Image

Several miles of paddling with only a few riffles brought us to a large lake. A shallow boulder field made us get out and walk the canoe through the last 100 yards to the lake. We started across and got chased to shore by another rain squall – though only for about 20 minutes.

A map error showed a passageway between an island and the mainland just before we were to enter the river again, but there was a solid isthmus between them. So we had to make our first portage of the trip – about 5 rods.

Tom had a good campsite marked about a mile and a half further down the river and 6:00 would just about see us there. The river starts to change it’s character now. Narrower with some rocky bluffs on either side.

Unfortunately, there were some college age kids camped at that site. First people we had seen since leaving the girls in the morning.

We traveled another couple of miles and found an acceptable campsite on the left bank with a small rapids on the far side of the river.

Weather was pleasant early in the day but off and on heavy rain made the evening kind of unpleasant. We had a tough time getting a fire started but finally managed to cook our first meal – beans and rice topped with grated cheese and wrapped in taco shells. Tasted good and filled us up.

Had hoped to spend some time after supper sitting outside or even fishing but hard rain soaked us and we retreated to the tent after hanging the food packs. Getting wet clothes off sure felt good.

Just a few notes:
We figure we have about 400# of food and gear – the food packs weigh about 90# a piece
It was really great of Beth and Mary Beth to bring us up here – I think they really did have a good time.
The First Nation members don’t seem to be very well off in the area around Pickle Lake – run down houses and rough looking characters.

Woke up to a NASTY morning. Cold – windy and wet. Just about everything was soaked. Got up about 5:30 and slugged around doing camp chores. Got going after a breakfast of corn meal mush and hot chocolate.

Paddled into the wind for the first couple of miles. Fog and mist blew past us. Saw our first moose – a yearling cow – about a mile from camp.

Tackled our first real portage around an unnamed waterfall. A granite ridge ran for most of the half mile of portage. Very nice and not too difficult – which was good because we each had to make three trips across. First trip Tom took the canoe and I took a food pack. Second, Tom took the other food pack and I took my #3. Last trip Tom took his #4 and I took both of our dry bags. Finished at 10:30.

Image

The bottom of the falls was beautiful. Pretty good drop and the water coming through four different channels.

Image

Had some trail mix and decided to break the fishing rods out. I caught a walleye on a Mepps and Tom soon had another. Within a few minutes we had four nice walleyes and one northern for supper. Caught a few more and threw them back.

By now it was lunch time. Kool-Aid, crackers, peanut butter and jelly, dried bananas and peanut butter cookies.

Tom wanted to paddle to the other side where he and his cousin caught some nice northerns on their last trip. As we were getting ready, the group we saw yesterday made it across the portage. They are from a camp called “Queen Elizabeth” from New London, Ontario. They are headed all the way to Ft. Albany as well. They are now ahead of us an we probably won’t see them again.

Crossed over and Tom caught two northerns with his first cast. One small one on his daredevle and a big one that grabbed it on the way in. Caught several northerns – 4 of them were 8# plus – and a couple more walleyes.

Finally shoved off and ran the rapids below the falls. The day cleared up into a warm and sunny one.

Image

Ran a series of three rapids and did a little more fishing before making camp about 4:30. Very nice site below the last rapids we ran. Had fish, mashed potatoes and chocolate pudding for supper. Tried to dry out as many things as we could. Hope to do some fishing before turning in.

Image

10:50 p.m. – Spent about an hour fishing without a bite. Can’t figure it out – looked like good water. Tom boiled some wild rice for breakfast in the morning.

Vocabulary, eh –
Jack – northern
Pickerel – walleye
Speck or speckle – brook trout

I am living one of my dreams thru your trip report. I have always wanted to canoe a Canadian river into the Hudon or James Bay area then take a train out. I have done alot of canoe tripping but nothing with moving water. Looks like I will have to take a white water class in the future. Don't stop now

Thanks, satchmoa. When I get to the end, you'll hear about an exciting flight from Ft. Albany to the end of the railroad line to get back to civilization. Hang in there! Another episode coming soon!

A LONG day! Got up at 5:00 and didn’t make camp until after 7:00. Saw a bear on the far side of the river from camp during breakfast and another late in the afternoon.

Image
***NOTE*** I posted this photo earlier but am including it (and others) where they occurred along the trip for context.

A short paddle brought us to a series of rapids above Kegami Falls. ***NOTE*** Many of the falls are named the same or similarly with only a letter change – I’m not referring to the same falls later in the trip, just one whose name sounds familiar*** One we decided not to run, so portaged around. The Camp Queen Elizabeth group was at the portage around the falls and we played leap frog with them all day.

Image

Kegami Falls was spectacular. The biggest single drop that we’ve seen so far. Portage was about half a mile long and quite treacherous. Had lunch at the far side. A short paddle brought us to another short portage. Another short paddle to a nasty rapids that after a half hour of hard work, we decided to line. That didn’t go well either, but we made it.

Image

Finally a long stretch of paddling smooth water. The river really took on a different character with sandy shorelines and birch and popple on the banks.

Reached Achapi Lake and it is a shore bird paradise. Tom saw many that he hadn’t seen before. Three airplanes were on the lake and took off while we crossed.

Image

Image

Image

Turned north for a strong couple of hours of paddling to get to camp. This stretch has grassy shorelines, birch, popple, willow and some jack pine. Every so often there is a moose camp with wood frames they must cover with tarps in the fall.

Image

Image

Spaghetti for supper. Still have 10 or more miles to go to get to Tom’s brook trout fishing spot.

Image

Bedtime – dishes done, food packs hung, camp tied down. This is the first night that the bugs have been bad – and they’re really bad.

Couldn’t have made this trip with anyone but Tom. I do my share but it always seems that my share is 40% and Tom’s 60%!

Hot and sunny today. Late in the afternoon it was still 90 degrees. At 9:45, warm and muggy. The last couple of days have been really nice.

Up at 5:00 and on the road by 8:00. Long, straight paddle for most of the morning. Started running into fast water about noon and had to negotiate most of it. We portaged one, then ran a long difficult one. Lots of moving from one line to another. Bumped into a few rocks on the lower end. VERY exciting!

Image

Hit a rock square and sat on top with another one, but got off without too much trouble. Lots of riffles and small rapids in between.

Arrived at the Misehkow about 3:00 and set up camp on a small grassy island where the Misehkow meets the Albany. Nice spot.

Image

Tom’s been talking about this creek for six months. They did well on brook trout here last time. We beat the water well into the evening and didn’t have a single bite. Will move on to the next spot tomorrow.

Image

Bugs kind of bad today. Black flies being the worst, followed closely by mosquitos. Even had a few deer flies show up today.

Took a bath in the river tonight. Tom will appreciate that!

Saw two colonies of otter today. One had six kits and one adult that was near. The other had 4 kits. Saw a single otter near one of the rapids we ran. Had a mink in camp tonight.

Image

Having a few problems with my body. First, not in very good shape yet, so run out of gas easily. My wrists are killing me. Man they’re uncomfortable, especially when paddling. Finally, my hands are really taking a beating. Cuts, blisters and cracking from drying out. Got to get whipped into shape soon.

First day we haven’t seen anyone else. Did see where someone is building a new camp and they had tons of material under tarps.

It's a cold day in northern Minnesota today, so I'm spending a little extra time posting some day's journals.

July 12, 2006

N 51 32.072’
W 89 05.234’
Altitude 1105 feet

Got a little later start this morning. Another hot, muggy day. It’s 10:00 and I’m still sweating! Paddled many miles, rapids and riffles. Nothing tough, but keeps you on your toes. Hit a river that flows into the Albany called the Etawamani. Supposed to be a good brook trout stream. Tom was impressed right away. It was a little after noon so we decided to go upstream a ways, check it out and have lunch. Tom started lining the canoe and I fished a little along the way.

Image
This actually is me lining at the start of the Etawamani - Tom took over soon afterward.

Caught a walleye which we needed for supper. A little further on, caught another. We fished another quarter mile and Tom caught four walleyes and a northern – but no brookies. He was really disappointed. Had lunch and had to decide what to do. Figured we’d hike the river for two more bends and if nothing happened would paddle back out to the Albany and find a camp. Wouldn’t you know it, on the first bend I caught a beautiful 2.5#, 17 inch brookie. Then Tom caught a 15 incher and a 16 incher. Scouted a little more and Tom caught another and I finished off with a 16 incher.

Image

Came back and made camp where we stashed the canoe. ***NOTE*** Today’s elevation is more than yesterday’s due to our lining upstream on this tributary for a couple of miles.***

Image

Image

Cleared out some brush for the tent and cooked along the shoreline. Had fish and potatoes for supper.

Image

Image

Fished for awhile after dishes were done. But no luck.

Image

I really seem to be drained at the end of the day. I knew I wasn’t in great shape for this trip – my fault – but it makes it hard to enjoy some of the things we’re doing when my energy level is so low. Hopefully that will start getting better.

On the road again tomorrow. Hopefully we’ll be to a fishing camp where we can send a letter out in a couple of days.

Had pancakes for breakfast and then paddled back out to the Albany. Started about 8:00 and paddled ‘til 8:00 tonight. Long day. Many rapids and riffles and 3 portages around waterfalls. Ran into the crew again (Queen Elizabeth) after not seeing anyone for two days.

This is Snake Falls. Actually considered shooting this one. The Queen Elizabeth crew did.

Made it to Miminiska Lake and hope to stop at the Lodge tomorrow.

Hot and muggy again. Looks like a storm brewing for tonight. Too tired to write, will write more tomorrow. Oh, saw lots of forest fire smoke today. Don’t know where from. (to the south of us all day)

Weather looked threatening for awhile today – actually rained a little, but overall pleasant. Though it was windy, it didn’t seem to be as hot.

After cornmeal for breakfast, paddled Miminiska Lake to Miminiska Lodge. Saw three motorboats with fishermen from the lodge.

As we pulled up to the beach, a young gal came down to meet us. Turns out that her name is Heather Liddle whose family owns that and several other lodges. Very pleasant and helpful. Made us a pot of coffee, answered a lot of questions and showed us around the place. I could see a trip there. She let us use the phone to call Jan and Beth to let them know we’re still okay. (They had a satellite internet hookup, which allowed us to check email and phone out!) Let us store a food pack there for a couple of days, will mail some letters for us and gave us some apples, oranges and cookies for the trip. What hospitality!

Image

Image

Really good to talk to Beth. I know she’s concerned about us and I wanted to make sure she and Mary Beth made it home okay. Out here the days are pretty full and your mind doesn’t get a chance to wander. I sure do miss her. Will get an anniversary card written tonight.

After the Lodge we paddled to the Keezhik River. This has been one of Tom’s biggest thrills to get to this river known for huge brook trout. We walked and lined the canoe (Tom did most of the lining) about three or four miles upstream.

Image

Only saw one brookie that hit, but we didn’t catch. Found a great walleye hole, though – I caught four with my first four casts. Between Tom and I we caught a dozen in about fifteen minutes – all nice eaters. Fish fry tonight!

Image

Camped at a pleasant fork in the river and the plan is to make our way the rest of the way upstream tomorrow – fishing what is supposed to be the most productive part of the river and paddle back to the same camp tomorrow night. Head back to Miminiska Lake to pick up our food pack and continue on our way.

Same campsite as last night. We explored to the end of the Keezhik River today. Lined, paddled and walked through the woods for about three miles – fishing all the way.

Image

Image

Image

This has been one of Tom’s dreams – to catch a brookie on the Keezhik with a fly rod. We caught lots of fish today, but few brookies. Seems to be walleyes and northerns below every riffle and rapids and they’ll take anything you throw at ‘em.

Image
Can you catch a walleye on a fly rod? You bet!

Caught one six pound northern today (supper) just dangling the line at my feet while I watched Tom catching another one.

I finally got a brookie about 10:00. A nice 16 incher on a Mepps.

Image

All the way to the end and almost all the way back before we saw another one. Tom got his brookie on a fly rod about six this evening. As a matter of fact, he got three.

Image

Image

Image

It always amazed me around northern Minnesota how you could find evidence of humans anywhere in the woods you went. Same here. Yesterday we were looking for a marked campsite and saw a blaze on a tree. Checked it out and it marked a trail. We followed it a couple of hundred yards and found the remains of an old shack. We are five miles off of the Albany River, back in the bush, and someone had hauled cut lumber and plywood that far back for a camp. Along the way today I saw two beer cans, a plastic jug and a life vest – obviously lost by someone. Wilderness? Is there any?

Again I say beautiful pics those brookies sure have some neat colors. I was wondering if you ate any of them was there meat a pink or red color?
I would rather be upside down in my canoe than right side up at my desk

We ate some later in the trip, but tried to release as many as we could. They do have pink meat. Interesting though, that six pound northern we had for supper had pink flesh - he'd been feeding well on the local brookies!

Why is it that you had a problem in bringing the pepper spray across?

It is illegal to bring pepper spray from the U.S. into Canada. They'll allow certain firearms with proper paperwork and a fee, but no pepper spray. Didn't make sense to us, but that's the way it is.

Just happened to stop in and noticed this report. The Albany has been on my list but I got sidetracked on the Missinaibi and the Bloodvein. Enjoying your pictures and story.

I have brought Bear Spray into Canada from the US but it must be specifically marked "Bear Spray".
