Stub Lake Trail
Forest: Superior National Forest

District: Kawishiwi Ranger District

Description: The 1.5 mile long Stub Lake Trail provides opportunities for seeing some interesting and unusual wildflowers in a variety of habitats. The array of flowers in bloom varies throughout the summer, so visitors are assured of running into wildflowers no matter the time of year they hike the trail.

Viewing Information: While passing through a cedar swamp on a boardwalk, visitors may glimpse nodding trillium, high bush cranberry, or marsh marigold in the spring. Later in the summer purple fringed orchid and jewelweed brighten the swamp. After leaving the cedar swamp, the trail passes over high ground through a forest dominated by quaking aspen, paper birch, and white spruce. In the spring this area is a great place to see round-lobed hepatica, pale bellwort, starflower, and wild ginger in bloom, while later in the summer wild roses and columbine can be found along the trail, and visitors may see yellow-flowered hairy honeysuckles climbing up a tree. Be sure to check out the wildlife viewing platform along the trail.

Directions: The Stub Lake Trail takes off from the Fall Lake Campground. Fall Lake Campground is located on Fall Lake about 6 miles east of Ely, MN. From Ely, travel east for 4.5 miles on Highway 169, which become Lake County Highway 18, also known as the Fernberg Road. Turn left on Lake County Road 182 and continue for 1.5 miles to the campground entrance. Look for signs for the hiking trail.

Ownership and Management: USDA Forest Service, Superior National Forest. For more information contact the Kawishiwi Ranger District at (218) 365-7600 (voice) or (218) 365-7602 (TTY).

Closest Town: Ely, Minnesota.
