memorial day weekend

I will be visiting South Kawishiwi campground memorial day weekend and am wondering what to look for in that area, with the warm weather it does seem that everything is about 2 weeks early in the cities. I would kind like to find some orchids, but may be a little early.

Should be able to find some early coral root, the pink ladyslippers are out and I've seen some jack-in-the-pulpit. Might be able to find some hooker's orchid as well.

Thank you for the reply. I visited the snottymoose website; very striking photography. In regards to the orchids, what is the type of habitat which I would seek these gems? The short hiking trail at the campground, would there be value in looking in that area?

These were found in a cedar bog. The calypso and twayblade really need a mossy floor with a lot of cover. The early coralroot can be found in a little higher ground. These are all small and pretty hard to spot. There are some pinks showing up and those are very easy to see. I haven't walked that whole trail by the campground, but I know there are many places along the Spruce Road that would fit the bill for all of these. I've seen pinks in the past on the Filson portage to the Kawishiwi and the Gabbro portage. Good luck! Report back what you find!

I have returned from my soggy adventure. I searched along the trail around the campground without successly locating any orchids. Searched old beaver dam area along Birch Lake Rd, no luck, searched area around Kawishiwi falls, no luck. Have a theory that Bambi likes to eat orchids!! All not lost, many other subjects to shoot (but not Bambi )
