The board of directors of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon made the toughest decision it has had to make in 25 years ? it canceled the 400-mile sled dog race because it could not guarantee mushers that there would be enough snow cover by Feb. 25. The race was originally slated to start Jan. 28, but was postponed for lack of snow. Since then, the snow pack, especially near Duluth, has not increased substantially. According to an article in the Duluth News-Tribune, organizers said at least a foot of snow was needed for the race. At the starting point in Duluth at the Ordean School, there is 1-3 inches, although there is 10 inches at Trail Center. At one point, the organizers considered shortening the race and starting near Sawbill or Devil's Track. The Beargrease Web site explained that "because of the remoteness of those spots, it wouldn?t be fair to our sponsors. The race just wouldn?t have gotten the visibility from the media or the spectators if we started up there." Ultimately, the lack of snow in Duluth is what forced the decision, they said. The board voted 6-3 to cancel the race, according to reports.
