North Country Trail

In March 2009, Sen. Amy Klobuchar [D-MN] introduced S. 553: A bill to revise the authorized route of the North Country National Scenic Trail in northeastern Minnesota to include existing hiking trails along Lake Superior's north shore and in Superior National Forest and Chippewa National Forest, and for other purposes. This trail revision would include the Kekekabic Trail, the Border Route Trail, and the Superior Hiking Trail in as part of the North Country Trail. The bill is currently with the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

The North Country Trail — 4,600 miles stretched across seven states all made possible by the hard work of more than 800 volunteers each year. This is the Great Lakes, the Northwoods, the path of westward expansion — a footpath linking communities from New York to North Dakota

Some quick facts about the North Country Trail:
Longest hiking path in the United States
Managed by the National Park Service
    Passes through 10 National Forests
Created by Congress in only 1980, making it just a baby by trail standards
