Snow Huts

Postby bwca » Sun Jan 23, 2011 12:59 am

I've never winter camped using a tent. I've always built a snow hut. The way I learned is to build a pile of snow. Stick a bunch of sticks in around the pile, each in about 6 inches. Then start digging out and placing the dug out snow back on top of the pile. The sticks placed in the pile earlier act as a guide as to when to stop digging in an area. Once the pile is dug out, remove some of the sticks as air vents.

I saw a snow hut tonight. They used a kit from Grand Shelter.
