Re: Moose River

Bjorn, when would you be going? The condition of the river depends on when. We have gotten a lot of snow this year, so the water levels are promising. I wouldn't say the river has a "lot" of portages, but I agree that for the most part, they are short. :)

Re: Fishing Tips?

The best fishing (& catching) time is spring. That is when it is going to be more productive for walleye, pike and trout. Smallmouth will bite too at that time though they are hitting hard on top water a little later on.

Do you have some time to do this mid-late May or early to mid June?

Re: Route Suggestions?

I looked into permits for June 15th and found that even though a number of entry points are full, there are a few that might work well for you & fit your preference for no motors & some fishing opportunities. A couple of them only have 1-2 permits left however. Depending on what route you wa...

Re: Fees?

The cost for the BWCA trip is $16.00 per person, per trip (not per day). How much you'll have to carry your canoe depends on what entry point you use. Some are right at the water's edge, some have a half mile or so, portage in. We can't really tell you how much you'll have to carry it unless you can...

No one takes longer trips?

Oh well, I guess we'll also see how soon (late) the ice goes out, won't we? :-(

Fishing this opener? Do you take a short trip?

I was wondering if anyone uses the beginning of Minnesota's fishing season to do a long trip? I know a lot of people take just a weekend trip for the most part.

Re: Secluded Smallmouth out of ELY? Suggestions wanted.

Yes, Indiana has some nice big smallies and isn't too bad for northern pike either. Just 2 campsites on the lake but not many go there.

I was there over 15 years ago and had a successful fishing 3 days.

Re: William Kent Krueger books

When I was in Barnes & Noble (Duluth) I saw something that said Krueger was coming out with a new book. Plus he was going to be at that store sometime soon to do a book signing. (not sure of date)

Re: Cell Tower Poll

Stripping away part of the wilderness experience has consequences on many layers. Being able to email photos of your Northern Pike catch to pals back in the city means you are missing part of that wilderness experience. Why are so many afraid to be alone? More of the reason for the tower is so that...

Article about the Boundary Waters

http://www.fishcamphunthike.com/adventu ... /blog-122/

One of our customers wrote this blog/article about the Boundary Waters as sort of an introduction to the park. Thought it was pretty good, especially for the new paddler.

Re: William Kent Krueger books

Thanks Barb, but I already do have 3 of the Krueger books, all in paperback and on audiobook.

Very good and since I live up here, I can see where he has "made up" some areas that others wouldn't pick up. (it doesn't matter because of course, this is fiction :-) )

Sour dough starter?

Anyone bring sour dough starter on a canoe trip?

The only problem I'd see is keeping the container from leaking. I love sour dough pancakes and batter.

Re: Grey Wolf Delisting and Hunting

Anyone think they will change there mind if it is shown that the main reason for the declining moose population in northern Minnesota is due to the increase in wolf population?

Just wondering.

Not enough moose up in the Arrowhead to let the hunt go on for this year and most likely for quite a number more, if at all.

Re: Physically Disabled

How about Lake One? You can still get to Lake Three with 2 short portages. The trails are pretty easy and you can help her on the uphill (which isn't much).

Re: Moose Survey

Ladies who go on solo trips?

I'm a new moderator here in Women in the Wilderness.

I have been going on solo trips the last few years (can't believe it took me so long to start them).

Wondering what other women take solo trips? And what do your trips consist of? Give us details. :-)

Someone told me that the conditions in Maine are almost exactly what we have here and their moose population is strong.

And many of the dead moose they find are not chewed on, so???
