Re: How bad are the bugs in July?

Skeeters are out there but not too bad (unless you attract more than your "fair" share. But the deer flies are out & the ankle biters are starting.

Long sleeves & full pants help a lot.

Re: Cellular Coverage

If around Moose River, Little Indian Sioux, Isabella River, Insula, very little cell phone coverage even by AT&T or Verizon. I like Verizon the best, but those areas it is best to have a satellite phone if you need to make or receive any calls.

Re: Seeking Secluded Smallie Fishing from Ely - ideas?

You could see if you can get a permit into Crab Lake #4. You have a 1.25 mile portage in, first 1/4 goes uphill.

Lots of bass there and if you want to get even more "away", go to the southern lakes like Phantom, Clark & Saca.

Re: 4 Day, 3 night canoe trip

Just a comment and suggestion; as an outfitter myself, we do not like hearing "I want to find some Class 3 (or 2) rapids to run. And we always check the canoes carefully when they go out & see if there are any "changes" to them when they come back, especially when we hear this. Ju...

Re: Recommended Restaurants?

Britton's is definitely one of the favorite "local" restaurants & serves breakfast & lunch. However, & I'll probably receive some grief, their coffee, while a good flavor is sort of weak tasting for many of us. I like dark rich coffee & use creamer/sweetner so weak coffee d...

Re: Planning a fishing trip

For fishing the border lakes & actually being on the Canandian side of the lake, you would need to go online & get an Ontario fishing license and outdoors card. If you send me an email I can send you a link to the correct page to go to. Besides for going up to a Ranger Station where they sel...

Least bugs & most fish is usually mid May to early June. If the ice doesn't open up soon, then I'd say about a week later on both sides.

Our spring is just barely "spring" so far, unfortunately! :-( We are really hoping that we have ice-out this year, on Fishing Opener. Last year is was 2 days later, not good. For bugs, this may be a good thing but it depends on how it is in May. You could contact us again around May 10th, ...

Re: 2 Day Trip

For a short 2 day trip (one night, correct?), you could try starting at #27 Snowbank and paddle over to Perent or Disappointment Lake. There are a number of hiking trails (part of the Kekekabic Trail) that you could do some day hiking trips on. Or to up to #14 Little Indian Sioux, paddle up to Shell...

Re: Bugs

Depending when in June and where you go. Early June more sandflies (we call them blackflies). Then the mosquitoes start mid June and we can have the ankle biting flies too. Each year is different for bugs, depending on how the spring has been. Wet & cold, not as many. Dry & hot, not as many....
