Took a trip back in '81 that took me into the BWCA interior where I didn't see anyone else for three days. When Vince contacted me in February about a trip, I suggested the same route for the same reason and he agreed. I began poring over maps and notes immediately, and the only thing I changed was that we made the loop backwards from my original. The party consisted of Vince, his son Michael and daughter Sarah, Pete and his daughter Katy and Nick and his son Jim along with myself. They hail from Rochester New York and have extensive paddling experience in the Alleghanies and Algonquin Park.

The morning of day one say us take off from the Lake One landing. When I take a party out, I never know how they will actually perform once out on the water and portages. As we crossed the first two short portages from Lake One to Lake Two, any fears I might have had were quickly extinguished:

As we traveled down the lake, we enjoyed the scenery and really got into the feel of the paddle:

We traveled for about two hours and had lunch on one of the last campsites before the first portage into Hudson. Beautiful day, little wind. The portage from Hudson to Insula was the first test of elevation and distance. I picked up a new map for this trip and was surprised to learn that the Forest Service must have dumped some fill into the ends of this one as my old map listed its length at 90 rods and now it's 105.

The wind had picked up and we felt that a campsite on the west end of Insula would do us well for the first night. We had steaks, mashed potatoes and peas for supper.

Day two found us with a bit of a tail wind, winding around the island of this grand lake. At the north end we jabbed right towards Alice Lake.

The paddle really becomes the Kawishiwi River at this point. At some times each shore line is only a few feet from the end of the paddle on either side of the canoe. Though paddling upstream, the only time that current was evident was right at the beginning of each of the three portages we made before lunch.

I introduced "power naps" after lunch. For a bunch of experienced backcountry travelers I was surprised that they didn't partake of this tradition. They quickly adapted, however!

After lunch we continued up the river two more portages and picked a campsite just south of Kivinivi Lake. Blueberries abounded all around the campsite and a rocky outcrop gave a great view. The first good evening of swimming took place.

A beautiful evening around the fire capped off a great day!

Day three would be our toughest day. We got going early and made the portage to Kivinive without problem. From Kivinivi to Anit was a different story. We had the first of several instances where beavers had altered the portage lengths and routes - some to the good, some to the bad. This one made us slog through muck for several rods before we hit solid ground.

After Anit, there is a sixty rod portage around a "lake" called Small Lake. In '81, the portage went up to a sea of grass where the lake used to be, with a trail through the middle of it. A quarter of a century has allowed trees and brush to grow up through the old lake bed and the new portage goes around all of it to Pan. Onward we traveled to Panhandle an unnamed lake and into Makwa. This is a beautiful lake. If it would have been at a different part of the day, we all would have loved to spend a day there. Unfortunately, we weren't eve to lunch yet, so we pressed on.

The 100 rod portage from Makwa to Hoe Lake is difficult to follow because so few people use it. This portage, and many more this day, posed a real problem especially for those carrying a pack in front and in back because you couldn't see what was below the grass and the ferns. Rocks, holes and logs provided many opportunities to twist an ankle or fall on your face.

Lunch was on Hoe. Michael fished almost every time we stopped and sister Sarah was the designated water pumper:

After lunch we pushed on doing a couple of small portages and a 160 followed by a 200 (longest of the trip) finally deciding to spend the night on Cap. Difficult campsite as the rock forms a large ledge from waters edge to campsite. Being the time of day it was, it was better than pushing the next couple of portages to get to the next camp site.

Day four saw us get a good start and we made the three portages to Fraser, down that lake and into Thomas by noon. We picked a nice site on the east side of the lake, set up camp and decided to fish for awhile in the afternoon.

Michael was able to catch enough walleyes to assist with supper that night as the appetizer. Great fry!

Day five meant that we had to get close enough to Lake One that we could get out for a noon pick up on day six. Easy enough into Kiana:

A little tougher from Kiana to Insula across the 180 portage. We met our first difficult head wind, but ducked behind the islands as much as we could, and then took the shortcut portage on the southwest corner of the lake to take some distance away to the portage. Across Hudson we went, and on down the Kawishiwi to the same campsite we lunched on the first day. Michael again supplies us with fish for supper:

Though the weather threatened during the night, it was actually quite pleasant paddling down the Lake One chain, even having the wind at our back for the last couple of stretches.

Back to the landing, we all looked back on the trip as a great time! Good weather, no one hurt, lots of hard work, and beauty difficult to match any where else! All vowed to return, and I'm sure that they will!
Hi everyone!
I'm new to this site, and even though I've posted a few things already, I though I'd introduce myself. I'm a history teacher way up here in Thunder Bay, and I thoroughly enjoy the outdoors. I've spend a lot of time on the boundary waters (North to Gunflint Lakes) and even travelled up the Gunflint Trail a few times.

My particular interest with the area is the PD Railway, or Port Arthur, Duluth and Western (hence the padwrr). I first learned about the railway way back in 1990 hunting at North Lake. I began to research the history of the railway in 1994 and have spent a lot of time walking the old grade. I've travelled to Gunflint twice, both to trace the railway and to visit the various sites of the Paulson Mine.

I hope to someday write a book about the railway, I just have to find the time between kids and work. I mentioned in a few of my posts that I do have a website about the railway (that does need to be redone):
http://members.shaw.ca/padwrr/home.htm

I found this site through an internet search about cell phone coverage in the Gunflint area. In addition to history, I love to hike and I'm an avid photographer.

I have created a new design in a plaque in regard to the wolf. It is not on my website, however, if you would like to see a picture of it, just drop me an email at info@rickseward.net and I will send you a free picture to look at.

The technique that you will see is called cast ivory inlay and as the name implies, the synthetic ivory is inlaid into the wood and then hand carved by the artist into whatever it is that I am trying to create.

The wooden plaque is actually a crosscut of Basswood and is about 3/4" thick and measures about 13 1/2" X about 9 1/2" in size and makes a great wall hanging.

Jane Howard, Cook County Star

County Sheriff Mark Falk reported to the county board at its Tuesday, August 19, 2008 regular meeting that a group of residents from the West End have complained about a flashing strobe light from a 230-foot tower near the Honeymoon Trail. The county’s 911/Communications Committee had discussed the issue and generated several possible options for dealing with the complaint.
The tower is used by the county for EMS (Emergency Management System) and fire communications and by numerous other entities including the U.S. Forest Service.
According to Federal Aviation Regulations, a tower over 200 feet must be lit during the day by a white strobe light unless it is painted with orange and white paint that has not faded and at night either by the same light or by flashing red lights every 100 feet. The towers must be monitored daily and a log must be kept recording that the lights are working.
Twenty-seven homeowners in the Honeymoon Trail area signed a petition asking the county to replace the white strobe light with flashing red lights. At the meeting was Rick Brandenburg of Pancore Lake Road, who said,“It’s enough to drive you crazy. People have to shut their shades at night. We don’t think we should have to put up with it. It affects our lifestyle.”
Another resident whose name is not known stated that one person couldn’t attend the meeting because he was so upset by the whole issue. “We want to be away from the sights and sounds of the cities,” he said. “We put up with fighter planes and sonic booms without complaining about it.”
Sheriff Falk said residents are especially bothered by the light in the winter when the sky is overcast and there is snow on the ground. An August 19 memo from Sheriff Falk to the county board states, “It is my understanding the flashing white strobe light under the above conditions is very bright and disturbing and shines into people’s homes at night.” Duane Ege, a private communications technology consultant for the county, was reached by phone after the meeting. According to him, “it has to be a solid cloud cover at the right height.”
Ege said most towers around the country are under 200 feet to avoid having to fulfill the exacting specifications of the FAA. He solicited a quote for the cost of adding flashing red lights. The estimate was $19,075 and Ege thought that was lower than the actual cost would be. The light fixtures would have to be replaced every six to ten years and new bulbs would be needed every two years.
In addition, Falk said, changing the lighting could require purchase of an electronic monitoring system. Currently, law enforcement personnel check the tower daily. “I don’t believe it’s as simple as changing the light colors,” he said.
Falk’s memo continued, saying, “I think it is also important that whatever solution is adopted [should be] the standard for all communication towers in Cook County.” The only other tower in the county over 200 feet is the 270-foot Bogus Lake tower roughly northwest of Colvill. Falk stated that any other towers being considered by the county would be under 200 feet.
Another consideration put before the county board was that the state has expressed interest in purchasing the tower. According to Ege, the county is currently negotiating with the state over the sales price.
At the meeting was Ellen Hawkins, who had also signed the petition. She said, “We’re only now getting more aware that there’s such a thing as light pollution.”
“This is an easy one for me,” said Commissioner Jim Johnson. “It’s a matter of being a good neighbor.” He proposed the installation of the red lights.
According to Ege, the tower has been there since the 1950’s and has had a strobe at the top for about 15 years.
The board decided to table the matter until Duane Ege could attend a county board meeting and directed Board Secretary Janet Simonen to see if he could attend the next meeting on August 26.
In the spring and fall, no problem. During the middle of the summer, they will last a day or two without problem. Many times I'll bring hamburgers, polish or steaks for meals the first two days and I'll start with them frozen. I'll place the eggs next to the frozen meat and that will keep them good and extra day.

                                      8/26/08 Report:

Quote:

The Walleye action has been tough the last couple weeks here on the Big V. I have had some difficulty finding a good consistent pattern.
Erratic weather has been a big part of the problem however it goes a little deeper than that. There is just to much food in the system and it's been tough getting them to eat. Finding Walleyes hasn't been the problem, finding active Walleyes has been a major problem.

I have had some great days in the last couple weeks however, it's been tough having two great days in a row. Cranks one day, lindy rigs and crawlers the next.
The deep water crank bite should be in full swing very soon...I hope.
Lindy rigs and a crawler have been good for me on occasion. Deep rocks and mainlake flats have been off and on, the deep weed lines have produced some good fish in recent days, however nothing has been very dependable day in and day out.

The Muskie action on the other hand has been very good the last couple of weeks.
deep weed flats, mainlake islands and rock structures and saddle areas in the main basin, have all been producing some great fishing.
Bucktails, topwaters and glider style jerkbaits have been my go to baits. I have had several multi fish days over the last two weeks and things should get even better as we move into September.

Have a great holiday weekend everybody and please remember to put some back.
Yup, walked it several times. Basically it's as it name implies, a watershed boundary. The water from South Lake flows east into the Pigeon River, Lake Superior and eventually the the Atlantic. The water from North Lake flows west and eventually north into Hudson's Bay.
Might have a few (illegal) pictures of myself on either side of the border.

Frankly, I don't know why any serious canoeist would consider a trail stove that burns butane, propane or alcohol. The efficiency of butane drops as the temperature drops. Below freezing, these stoves hardly work at all. And with lengthy use the tank "super cools" (you can see the frost!) which reduces efficiency still more. Propane is very efficient but the tanks are heavy and bulky. Alcohol stoves can put out good heat but they lack temperature controls and they go through fuel very fast: they are fine for a day or three but not for a week or two. White gasoline (Coleman/Blazo fuel) stoves are the sensible way to go. They burn hot, are reliable and efficient in any temperature and are inexpensive to operate. My favorites are the Primus Omnifuel and Optimus Nova (distributed by Brunton). Why? Because they don't have any plastic parts which can burn or melt. And, they have generously long fuel delivery tubes that keep the fuel tanks away from the burner--overhanging pots don't cause "explosive" problems. For an inexpensive gasoline stove, consider the old Coleman PEAK 1. It's a fine all-round stove.
